Job summary

The post holder is responsible for the management and delivery of clinical research in various specialities such as Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cancer, Critical Care and Emergency Department among other specialities that are new at KGH.

Ensuring that it is conducted according to ICH Good Clinical Practice guidelines and department safeguards for the well-being of patient/study participants.

Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to and liaising with other staff. This includes the provision of specialist research related education and training.

Responsible for implementing a clearly defined integrated approach to research delivery within the clinical setting.

In conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team, facilitate good quality research, lead and develop the research nurse team and monitor standards of care.

Responsible for the day-to-day management of delegated teams of research nurses ensuring appropriate cover and skill mix for smooth running of research projects. Monitoring their performance and resolving issues – including HR issues, recruitment, appraisal, mentorship, and career development.

Liaise with the Principal Investigators (PIs), allocate research projects to research nurses/AHPs, using professional judgement to assess workload and nursing capacity and ensure studies are delivered to time and targets.

Main duties of the job

Expert Nursing Practice

Responsible for the management and delivery of complex research studies as an expert, autonomous research practitioner with specialist skills and within clinical competencies.

This includes:

Ensuring high standards and continuity of care for research participants during their study participation.

Provide expert, specialist clinical advice for patients, carers and other health professionals as appropriate.

Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team and maintaining excellent links with staff in clinic, ward, and treatment areas regarding the protocol and care required for study/trial participants.

Assessing patients/study participants for eligibility for research and monitoring their condition throughout their participation.

Maintaining accurate documentation of events in the clinical and research notes and ensuring timely safety reporting.

Contributing to the on-going development of clinical research within the Trust and partners in line with the NIHR agenda.

Obtain, develop and maintain theoretical and practical knowledge of critical illness and common underlying conditions seen in critical care and keep up to date with relevant research.

Perform trial-specific tests and interventions and administer trial medications as required.

Provide information, expert advice and support to actual and potential participants regarding their participation in clinical research in order to obtain effective informed consent
