Job summary

Colne Ward is a Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit within the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre at Basildon. The centre boasts some of the most modern cardiothoracic treatment facilities in the country. It was purpose built to accommodate highly equipped operating theatres and cardiology facilities needed to provide world class treatment.

Colne Ward cares for patients after cardiothoracic surgery as well as providing an emergency service to the community of Essex and the surrounding counties. Receiving patients directly from ambulance crews for people that have a cardiology or cardiac surgical emergency, such as an out of hospital arrest or an aortic dissection.

Due to expansion of our service we a looking for motivated and enthusiastic nurses to join our friendly, dynamic team. You will work as a skilled member of the team to assist in high provision of care to patients and their families.

We will provide:

A minimum 6-weeks supernumerary.

Involvement in team projects, research and clinical trials.

A committed Education Team, supporting your learning through courses, study days and at the bedside. Such as the Nurse Development course and Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS) study day .

Opportunity to apply for a post grad course in Critical Care.

The chance to develop skills and knowledge in caring for level 2 & level 3 patients, including those on advanced respiratory, cardiac and renal support.

Main duties of the job

Your role will include assessment, planning, implementation, and the evaluation of care of level 2 and level 3 patients following cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology patients requiring enhanced level of care.

You will ensure nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the department and the Trust and maintain knowledge of current trends in healthcare and in the profession.

You will be willing to develop your organisational skills and clinical skills and knowledge, including caring for patients receiving advanced respiratory support, renal therapy and advanced cardiac support. As your skills and competencies are achieved, you will assist in the monitoring and supervision of junior staff ensuring that all staff work to achieve an acceptable safe standard and quality of care.

You will assist with the provision of an environment conducive to the education of staff and will support the induction of new staff and students as well as provide supervision to students in practice and support junior staff.

  • Pre-registration experience in Critical Care
