Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join our experienced, passionate and supportive Gynaecological Oncology Specialist Nursing Team at UHB as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate and motivated nurse who is keen to develop their knowledge and specialist skills within gynaecological oncology. You will be supported by experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists and work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to provide holistic, patient centred and sensitive care.
You will support women and their families throughout the cancer pathway, from investigation and diagnosis through treatment and follow-up, including living with and beyond cancer.
This is a particularly exciting time to join the team, with the development of our new robotic gynaecological oncology surgical service. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support patients undergoing robotic surgery and contribute to the development of the specialist nursing service as this new pathway becomes established.
This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse with a passion for cancer care to develop within a specialist CNS role, expand their knowledge of gynaecological oncology and be part of an evolving and innovative service, while making a positive difference to the care and experience of women affected by gynaecological cancer.
Main duties of the job
Act as a key point of contact for patients and families throughout the gynaecological cancer pathway.
Provide holistic, patient-centred assessment, identifying physical, psychological, emotional, social and practical needs.
Provide specialist information, advice and support during investigation, diagnosis, treatment, progression, recurrence and living with and beyond cancer.
Support patients to understand their diagnosis, treatment options and ongoing care, promoting informed decision-making.
Work collaboratively with the Gynaecological Oncology MDT and wider cancer services to ensure coordinated, seamless care.
Provide specialist advice and support to ward and clinical teams caring for patients with suspected or confirmed gynaecological cancer.
Contribute to personalised care and support planning, including assessment, information, signposting and appropriate referrals.
Participate in MDT meetings, clinics and specialist nurse-led activities in accordance with competency and service needs.
Develop specialist knowledge and clinical skills through education, supervision and reflective practice.
Contribute to service development, audit, quality improvement, patient experience and education.
Promote evidence-based care in line with local and national guidance and professional standards
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
- Portfolio of certified / accredited post registration professional development
Desirable
- Relevant oncology/gynaecology/cancer care qualification.
- Advanced communication skills training.
- Teaching/assessing qualification.
- Leadership development/training.
- Relevant postgraduate study or willingness to undertake
Experience
Essential
- Post registration experience with evidence of knowledge and development in gynaecology
- In depth knowledge of specialist procedures required for role, with willingness to undertake further training/ education to achieve agreed level of competence.
- Knowledge of standards and policies associated with role.
- Experience of working in a multi- disciplinary and cross agency work environment.
- Demonstrable understanding of national/NHSE guidance, cancer pathways and diagnostic and treatment standards for gynaecological cancers, and the ability to apply these within the Gynaecological Oncology CNS role.
- Demonstrable understanding of clinical governance / patient safety process’s in relation to their personal/professional accountability.
Desirable
- Previous experience within gynaecology, oncology or cancer services.
- Experience in caring for patients with gynaecological cancer.
- Experience of holistic needs assessment and personalised care.
- Experience of nurse-led clinics or telephone follow-up.
- Involvement in audit, service development or quality improvement.
- Experience of education and supporting the development of colleagues.
